School safety officer Jason Schafer was honored Tuesday after he sprang into action, when Tyler White, a fifth grader at Cordello Avenue Elementary School began to choke on a water bottle cap. The officer began the Heimlich maneuver and was able to help dislodge the bottle cap from Tyler's throat.

Miriam Friedman graduated from the Hebrew Academy of Five Towns & Rockaway and continued her education at Princeton University. A decade later, she works as an innovation strategy consultant. Her advice to high school graduates is to let their passion guide them to a career.

Anmol Gupta graduated from Sachem High School East and continued his education at Harvard University. He is now the founder and chief executive of Peech, a process mining consulting company. His advice to high school graduates is to work hard and things will come naturally.

Nathan Siegelaub graduated from East Meadow High School and continued his education at Harvard University. When Nathan's mother was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer, he moved back home and became a full-time caregiver with his father. 

'Things need to be savored' 

Home-based day care providers say late payments from the county's Department of Social Services are forcing them to cut staff and run up credit card debt. NewsdayTV's Andrew Ehinger reports.
