Latest on mascot ban

School safety officer Jason Schafer was honored Tuesday after he sprang into action, when Tyler White, a fifth grader at Cordello Avenue Elementary School began to choke on a water bottle cap. The officer began the Heimlich maneuver and was able to help dislodge the bottle cap from Tyler's throat. 

'Thank you' 

The Wantagh and Connetquot school districts have been granted extensions to comply with the state's Native American mascot and imagery ban. Newsday education reporter Darwin Yanes and NewsdayTV's Ken Buffa report.

School districts making a 'good faith effort'

Nathan Siegelaub graduated from East Meadow High School and continued his education at Harvard University. When Nathan's mother was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer, he moved back home and became a full-time caregiver with his father.

Home-based day care providers say late payments from the county's Department of Social Services are forcing them to cut staff and run up credit card debt. NewsdayTV's Andrew Ehinger reports.
