Threat, breach add to list of Long Island school incidents as students return

A campus breach in East Islip and a Sunday online threat to students in Huntington Station brought to at least five the number of school-related security investigations by police since fall classes mostly resumed a week ago.

Police in Suffolk have now responded to at least four school-related reports of verbal or physical threats, including one allegedly involving a knife, as well as a security breach. In Nassau, police are continuing an investigation after a middle school student allegedly was found with a bullet.

The most recent alleged threat, made on social media toward Henry L. Stimson Middle School in Huntington Station and two students, led officials to contact the Suffolk police department Sunday night. South Huntington Union School District Superintendent Vito D'Elia alerted the schools community in an email Monday.

Suffolk police officers deemed the threat noncredible, D'Elia said, but added they would be on campus Monday as a precaution.

District officials did not respond Monday to a request for comment. Late on Monday, Suffolk police confirmed the threat but had no further comment.

On Friday, an unidentified woman entered East Islip Middle School through a door that police said was locked, but had loose screws.

In a community alert Saturday, Principal Anthony Montemarano told middle school families that "at no time were our students or staff in imminent danger."

"The individual, who did not appear to pose any immediate threat, was quickly intercepted by our security team and escorted out of the building without incident," Montemarano continued. The principal added that there "was no need" to initiate a lockdown or lockout procedure.

Separately, a student at Brennan High School in West Babylon was charged Wednesday after allegedly threatening to "shoot people at the school," according to Suffolk police.

And on Thursday, a student at Jonas E. Salk Middle School in Levittown allegedly brought a bullet into the building. In a message to parents, Levittown schools Superintendent Todd Winch said the student did not have a weapon. Nassau police investigated but had no updates Monday. 

Also last Thursday, a 15-year-old student at Sachem High School North was allegedly found with a knife while waiting for a school bus. School staffers confiscated the weapon after the student left the bus, Suffolk police said. 

Officers arrested and charged the teen with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Suffolk police said officers determined the student was threatened by another 15-year-old Sachem North student in July, who was also arrested and charged with second-degree aggravated harassment.
