As a plume of smoke from Canadian wildfires raised air pollution levels in New York, officials extended through midnight Friday an air quality advisory for the state.

The current alert in effect means the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recommends that “individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects” — and that people especially sensitive to the effects of elevated pollutants limit their outdoor exposure.

Explore the map below, updated hourly according to airnow.gov, a federal website run by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, to see the latest air quality readings for your area by typing in an address, community name or ZIP code into the search box at the bottom left, or use the navigation tools.

The map shows the levels of particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5), which are tiny particles or droplets in the air that are two and one half microns or less in width. The different colors shown on the map indicate if these levels have reached unhealthy levels, with yellow being "moderate," orange being "unhealthy for sensitive groups" and red "unhealthy" for all groups.
