The $192 million moved through a myriad of accounts with names like Perfect World, True Grit and Wild Fire Holdings at financial institutions ranging from Goldman Sachs in New York to Banque Privée Edmond de Rothschild in Europe.

David Brooks used the money to pay for a $5,000 pen, a $60,000 replica of the bronze bull on Wall Street and a $3-million lawyer's fee, an FBI agent testified Monday in federal court in Central Islip.

Robert Cappadona, head of the FBI's forfeiture unit in New York, said he reviewed tens of thousands of pages of documents from financial accounts to determine how Brooks, former head of the DHB Industries military contractor that was based in Westbury, used the $186 million he made in stock sales and $6.3 million in illegal compensation from the company.

The forfeiture hearing, which concluded Monday after five days of testimony, was called by U.S. District Judge Joanna Seybert.

Seybert is trying to decide how much of the $192 million taken by Brooks, and the $5.3 million taken by co-defendant Sandra Hatfield, DHB's former finance chief, should be forfeited to the government.

Hatfield, DHB's former chief operating officer, and Brooks were convicted in September of multiple counts of conspiracy, fraud and insider trading.

Government prosecutors James Knapp and Kathleen Nandan and their financial expert said Brooks should forfeit between $58 million and $192 million.

Brooks' attorneys Judd Burstein and Gerald Shargel and their expert maintain Brooks should forfeit, at most, $2.9 million.

Seybert asked both sides to file briefs on various legal issues raised during the hearing before she decides on the forfeiture amount.

Brooks is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
