One firefighter was injured battling an early morning fire Thursday that destroyed a storage shed at an abandoned commercial property in East Farmingdale, Suffolk County fire officials said.
The fire at the site, just north of the Southern State Parkway, was reported at 2:29 a.m. — and firefighters from East Farmingdale, South Farmingdale, Farmingdale Village, North Amityville and North Lindenhurst responded, as did an ambulance crew from West Babylon. Police said the fire was reported by a passing motorist, who called 911.
Fire officials said that while the scene was listed as being on Route 110, the shed appears to be on the adjacent property, which also backs up to a home on a nearby street. Both commercial property locations are currently fenced off and unoccupied.
Fire officials said the fire was contained to the shed — and that the residence was not damaged.
The firefighter, whose identity was not disclosed, is a volunteer from East Farmingdale, and officials said he was transported to a hospital for treatment after suffering a foot injury at the site. The extent of any injuries was not disclosed.
