Handgun found on William Floyd High School student, police say
Suffolk County police detectives have opened an investigation after a student was found in
possession of a handgun at William Floyd High School in Mastic Beach on Friday afternoon, a department spokesperson confirmed.Just before the high school's regular 1:34 p.m. dismissal, a high school student was "brought to an administrator’s office for possible vaping," according to a statement the William Floyd School District released Friday afternoon.
"When the student was searched with a metal detecting wand, it was discovered that the student was in possession of a handgun," the statement reads. "The handgun was confiscated and the police were immediately notified. This has been turned over to law enforcement who are continuing their investigation."
As of approximately 8:45 p.m., a Suffolk police department spokesperson confirmed that detectives were still investigating the incident, adding that it began at approximately 1:15 p.m. Friday.
"The student will be dealt with through the criminal justice system," the district said in a statement. "In addition to any criminal charges, the student will also be subject to severe consequences according to the school district code of conduct."
