Centenarian: Julia Melzer
JULIA MELZER, born Nov. 2, 1911, in Ukraine, immigrated to America in 1928, learned English in night school and became a citizen. She was a seamstress at Rogers Peet men's clothier in Manhattan and wed Berthold Melzer (now deceased) and had two children, Albert and Dorothy. In World War II, Julia worked at Mitchel Field as a riveter and packed parachutes. Later she worked in the bridal department at A&S in Hempstead. She has two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. In her 80s, she often drove friends into the city to go dancing at Roseland. In her 90s, she worked for the Nassau Board of Elections. Julia celebrated her 100th birthday at her granddaughter's home in Hauppauge.
