Love Story: Kimberly Kumar and Kevin McCarthy

Newlyweds Kevin McCarthy and Kimberly Kumar of Islip were married in September. Kevin recalls another wedding that led to their courtship.

I was sitting at my desk at Canon U.S.A. in Lake Success one morning in 2009 and noticed that the newest member of the division, Kimberly, was being introduced to everyone. She had worked at the company for a couple of years, and while we never really spoke before, I had heard a lot about her since she has the type of personality people tend to gravitate toward.

Seeing her around the office was great since I knew she would be a valuable addition, but she was also very easy on the eyes as well.

About a month later one of our co-workers got married on what was one of the rainiest days that I can remember. Despite the weather, I knew the day was going to be a special one but wasn't sure just how much until I saw Kimberly walk in the room. We were seated at the same table, and I knew that was my chance to really get to know her better.

I went over to where she was sitting, and we started making small talk. The DJ then started playing a song that I really like, and I looked her in the eyes, grabbed her by the hands and led her to the dance floor. We danced and laughed through the rest of the night. We still talk about how much fun we had together, but for me, I knew that night had changed my life forever.

From that point on, Kimberly, who was 26, and I, 29, were nearly inseparable, and every weekend was like a new adventure. Whether it was road trips, walks in the park, rock climbing or trying a new restaurant, there was never a dull moment.

One of the greatest aspects of our relationship is our backgrounds. She is Guyanese, and I am Irish-American. The music, foods and customs are so vastly different that learning about each other's cultures really helped bring us closer together. I have even learned a few new Caribbean dance steps.

Kimberly and I dated for more than two years and were married this year on Sept. 3 at the Mansion at Timber Point. That day was so special, and I could not have asked for more. We honeymooned on the beautiful island of Barbados.

Kimberly and I still work at Canon. We are looking forward to the company's move to Melville in 2013 and are always on the lookout for new and exciting adventures.
