Way to Go! Mineola student hits high note
A Mineola High School student has been making a mark with his music.
Senior Adam Tobar, who was among a dozen students statewide to win the New York State School Music Association’s 2022 Songwriting Showcase Award, will perform an original composition in December at the association’s All State Festival and Winter Conference in Rochester. Tobar’s song “Wow” is a digital tune that he described as having a “very strange structure” with three sections and as being “very cheesily about a girl.”
He was also selected to present his original music in the association’s Electronic Music Showcase in 2020 and 2021.
“I’m excited to have a chance to perform,” said Tobar, 17. Of his songwriting, he said: “At first I made electronic music, like little beats and stuff, but since then I’ve started writing songs.”
Tobar, who started creating music in the seventh grade, writes what he calls “indie music” using a Mac laptop and software including Logic Pro. His latest album, “Bloom,” is available on streaming platforms under the artist name Adam!
“Adam thinks outside the box,” said Karen Bernstein, supervisor of fine and performing arts for Mineola School District. “He is constantly trying to work on his craft because he’s really passionate about it.”
Tobar is also a percussionist and section leader in his school’s marching band, a section leader in the school’s a cappella group, and a student at Nassau BOCES Long Island School for the Arts in Syosset.
