Worker struck by car, killed on Long Island Expressway in Woodbury, police say

A worker assisting a bridge maintenance crew on the Long Island Expressway in Woodbury was struck by a passing car and killed Wednesday, police said.

Nassau County police said the fatal collision occurred on the westbound expressway near Exit 44, the exit for the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway, at 12:20 p.m.

The victim was identified only as a 27-year-old man. The driver of the car was identified only as a 29-year-old man.

Police said the victim had stopped his 2007 International truck alongside the road and was assisting the bridge maintenance crew when the driver, in a 2020 Mitsubishi Mirage traveling in the right lane, struck him outside the truck.

The victim suffered what police described as "multiple trauma injuries" and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The driver of the Mitsubishi was not injured. The car was impounded for a safety check. The investigation is continuing, police said.

The collision forced the closure of the westbound expressway and the northbound Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway in the area for several hours, police said.

Both expressways reopened at 5:20 p.m., police said.
