LIRR: Trains on or close to schedule after Wednesday morning delays
Repairs to a broken rail in an East River tunnel were completed Wednesday morning, after causing dozens of delays and cancellations systemwide during the morning commute, the Long Island Rail Road said.
Spokeswoman Meredith Daniels said the broken rail was fixed at about 9:45 a.m.
"There are still some residual westbound delays of up to 40 minutes," Daniels said shortly after 10 a.m. "Since the rail's been repaired and rush hour is over, we can start to catch up."
The LIRR said in an email alert to customers at about 11:30 a.m. that it was operating at or near its normal schedule. Daniels said it was unlikely the delays would be an issue during the evening rush hour.
Of the 144 trains scheduled to operate during the morning rush, 95 of those were delayed or canceled, Daniels said. The average delay was about 33 minutes, she said.
Also, the LIRR said a man in his 40s, not authorized to be on the tracks, was hit by an equipment train at about 7:05 a.m. at the Great Neck station, temporarily suspending service in both directions on the Port Washington Branch.
Limited service was restored at about 7:45 a.m., the LIRR said.
Daniels said emergency personnel responded and that the man was transported to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset.
"He was conscious and alert," Daniels said.
