Joyce Knipper, the mother of U.S. Marine Cpl. Michael J. Knipper, shown here in her Smithtown home on Tuesday, July 23, 2019, holds a stuffed bear called Courage which was sent to her by a support group for families of serving Marines. Recipients of the bear keep it for a few weeks and then send it back so it can be sent to yet another family. While the Knippers have had the bear in their possession, they've taken it to a concert at the beach, their church, the home of a neighbor who served in the Marines and most importantly to the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Park in Ronkonkoma. In its journey across the country, the bear travels with a journal which each family contributes to.
