Long Island weather forecast: Rain late Thursday into Friday
Long Island will get a heavy dose of rain and heavy winds overnight through Friday, with the potential for coastal flooding in vulnerable areas, according to the National Weather Service.
The rain moved into the area Thursday afternoon and was expected to pick up overnight before letting up until Friday afternoon, said Bryan Ramsey, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Upton.
“By the time we get into Friday evening it should pretty much be out of here,” Ramsey said late Thursday afternoon, adding that Long Island should expect just under an inch of rain in total.
However, vulnerable areas should prepare for possible coastal flooding.
The service issued a coastal flood advisory for southern Nassau County through 3 a.m. Friday, and for northwest Suffolk County through 6 a.m.
Minor flooding is possible in vulnerable locations, including homes, businesses, parking lots and parks near the waterfront and shorelines, the weather service said.
Road closures are possible, and vehicles parked in vulnerable areas could become flooded, the advisory warned,
Wind gusts will reach up to a high of around 46 mph overnight and will slowly diminish during the day on Friday, officials said. A wind advisory is in effect for all of Long Island through Friday afternoon and early evening. The high temperature for the day should be about 60 degrees.
No rain is expected for the remainder of the weekend, with cloudy skies and high temperatures in the mid-50s Saturday and mostly sunny skies and high temperatures near 60 degrees on Sunday, according to the weather service.
The forecast for Monday calls for sunny skies and a high in the mid-60s.
