A man convicted in the 2002 drag racing deaths in Muttontown of a soon-to-be-married couple was arrested Friday morning in Southampton Village on charges that included driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest, officials said.
Kyle Soukup, 27, of East Hills, pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Southampton Village Court on Friday to the charges of DWI, resisting arrest, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, operating a vehicle without a court-ordered ignition lock, and possession of marijuana. He was ordered held without bail until his next court appearance on Monday.
Soukup, then a teenager, and the teenage driver of a second car, Blake Slade, were sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the 2002 crash at Route 106 and Muttontown Road.
Soukup was driving a 2000 Corvette and Blake a 2002 Mercedes that slammed into a 1993 Jeep carrying Sophia Bretous, 23, and her fiance, Jean Desir, 31, of Westbury, killing them both. The couple were to be married in August that year.
The cars struck the Jeep with such force it split in two, police said. Prosecutors said the teens were driving more than twice the legal limit of 55 mph. The teens were indicted on murder charges, but pleaded guilty to lesser manslaughter charges.
Soukup was arrested Friday at 4:30 a.m. while driving near 229 White St. in Southampton Village. Additional information about the arrest was not immediately available.
