A 22-year-old Binghamton University student from Westbury was killed, and a fellow student who has left the country is a person of interest in the case, Binghamton police said.

On Friday afternoon, Haley Anderson, a senior nursing student, was found dead at an off-campus residence on Oak Street. Police investigated the case as a “suspicious” incident, and later declared her death a homicide after an autopsy was performed.

Binghamton police did not release the name of the person of interest, but said he is a male nursing student at the university who had a “previous domestic/romantic relationship” with Anderson. Police said the male student had left the country by an international flight, before authorities found Anderson’s body.

“This incident and the circumstances of the death was not a random act or involving the conduct of a stranger,” police said in a news release.

Police did not reveal the cause of Anderson’s death Saturday.

Binghamton police had responded to a report asking to check her welfare when they found her at 1 p.m. Friday. Such calls occur when people cannot contact a person for an extended time.

The university’s Facebook page offered a message of sympathy to her loved ones.

“Our entire university community extends our deepest condolences to Haley’s family and friends, both here in Binghamton and in her hometown of Westbury, N.Y.,” the message said.

The message added that counseling is available for students. University officials said there is no threat to public safety.

Nassau County police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation at Binghamton and the Port Authority Police Department are assisting with the investigation, the Binghamton Police Department said.
