Brief LIPA outage hits 6,100 in Nassau

For the second time in two days a suspected equipment failure led to a significant power outage for LIPA customers -- mostly recently for about 10 minutes early Friday in Nassau County.

A LIPA spokeswoman, Elizabeth Flagler, told Newsday that the outage Friday, which affected more than 6,100 customers in East Meadow and North Bellmore, was resolved quickly.

The outage occurred at about 10:10 a.m., she said, adding that customers were back on line at about 10:20 a.m.

The issue was the result of "an equipment failure" at the LIPA substation in North Bellmore, Flagler said. Asked if the issue was related to the first real hot spell since superstorm Sandy, Flagler said: "Sometimes, equipment just fails."

The outage comes just one day after an equipment issue related to a utility pole in the Rockaways caused more than 5,000 customers in Neponsit and Breezy Point to lose power. The utility has not said what specific problem led to that outage, which lasted about two hours on Thursday.
