Police officers on routine patrol late Sunday in Hempstead arrested a man for weapon possession after hearing "multiple" gunshots -- and seeing the man run into a nearby parking garage.

Kevin Dingle, 20, of 67 Terrace Ave., Hempstead, was arrested after Hempstead police officers saw him run into a parking garage at 100 Terrace Ave. moments after hearing what they described as "multiple shots fired." A loaded .380-caliber semiautomatic pistol was recovered. Police said that pistol had been reported stolen in Virginia.

No one was injured in the incident, which took place just before 11:30 p.m.

Police said Dingle was charged with two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and possession of stolen property.

He is scheduled for arraignment Monday in First District Court in Hempstead.
