A Freeport man faces an assault charge after hitting another man in the head with a metal pipe Sunday outside a Roosevelt bar, Nassau County police said.

Daniel Cruz, 30, was involved in a physical altercation with a man, 39, outside the Gringo Bar at 449 Babylon Tpke. at about 4:10 a.m., according to a report by First Squad detectives.

Cruz, of 117 Stevens St., went to his vehicle for a pipe and then came back and "struck the victim in the head, causing a laceration," the report said.

Cruz then fled in his vehicle before First Precinct officers found him on Seaman Avenue in Freeport, police said. Cruz at first refused to exit his vehicle but was eventually arrested, police said.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital where he was admitted and listed in stable condition. The weapon used was recovered, police said.

Cruz is charged with assault, possession of a dangerous weapon and obstruction of governmental administration. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday at First District Court in Hempstead.
