A man was seriously injured when he was stabbed by two men who attempted to rob him late Sunday on a street in Freeport, breaking free and running to a nearby house for help, police said.

The attack occurred about 11:50 p.m. near the intersection of Southside and Sportsmans avenues.

Nassau County police said the 34-year-old victim suffered a lacerated liver and a partially collapsed lung in the attack.

He was taken to a hospital by police ambulance and was in serious but stable condition, police said Tuesday.

Police said one attacker had a gun, the other a knife.

They said the victim, who tried to wrestle the gun from one of the robbers, was stabbed four times in the attack.

Police said the attackers are believed to be in their early 20s and about 5-foot-5. Police ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
