Cops: Officer gets occupant out of burning home

Police are investigating a house fire Wednesday afternoon in Uniondale in which a Nassau County police officer came to the aid of an occupant and assisted him out of the burning home, police said.

An 18-year-old man was at his Midland Street residence "when the home started to fill with smoke," Nassau County police said in a Thursday morning news release.

"The victim was able to exit the house and call 911," police said.

A 37-year-old man was in the basement and when he came upstairs he saw the fire, and "then went back downstairs," police said.

A First Precinct police officer who responded to the 3:39 p.m. fire was told of the person in the house so he went inside and, after checking the first floor, he heard the 37-year-old "screaming for help," police said.

The officer "went to the basement and assisted the victim out of the home," police said.

Police did not specify the relationship of the house occupants. Neither the occupants nor the officer was injured.

The Uniondale Fire Department, assisted by Hempstead and East Meadow fire departments, extinguished the fire, the cause of which police said investigators "deemed non suspicious." The blaze remains under investigation.
