Hicksville man charged with assault after struggle with cops, police say

A Hicksville man was charged with assault early Wednesday morning after police said he resisted arrest and struggled with arresting officers after they tried to pull him over for traffic violations, Nassau police said.

Police said Helal Mohmand, 19, was riding a black 2007 Honda motorcycle east on West John Street in Hicksville at 1:10 a.m. when officers said they saw him break several traffic laws. Officers tried to pull Mohmand over on Hicks Circle, where Mohmand pulled into his driveway, police said.

When they pursued and told him he was under arrest, police said Mohmand resisted and shoved arresting officers into a parked car behind them, causing one officer to injure his left hand, forearm and elbow. While they were arresting Mohmand, police said his family members tried to help him and shot video of the incident on a cellphone.

Police said the injured officer was taken to a hospital and has since been released. The cellphone that recorded the incident was recovered by police, according to a news release.

Mohmand, of 4 Hicks Circle, was charged with two counts of second-degree assault, reckless driving, resisting arrest, third-degree aggravated unlicensed operator, and multiple vehicle and traffic law violations, police said.

Mohmand was arraigned on Wednesday at First District Court in Hempstead. He was released on $1,500 cash bail and is scheduled to return to court on Friday, according to court records.
