Hicksville man charged in 3 separate bank heists

A Hicksville man robbed three Nassau County banks in a four-month span, including one in which he was armed with a handgun, Robbery Squad detectives said Tuesday.

Evan Kerpen, 34, of 23 Myers Ave., faces three counts of first-degree robbery and three counts of third-degree robbery and is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday at First District Court in Hempstead.

A police spokesman Tuesday could not say whether Kerpen is a suspect in any other bank robberies or provide details on how police were able to link him to the three robberies in which he is charged.

"That's all he is being charged with now," the spokesman said.

Kerpen's most recent robbery was Saturday, when he used a black handgun to hold up the Bank of America at 565 S. Oyster Bay Rd. in Plainview, police said.

At about 9:05 a.m., he presented a note demanding cash to a teller, took an unspecified amount of cash and left on foot on northbound South Oyster Bay Road, police said.

He also took unspecified amounts of cash from a TD Bank at 500 Old Country Rd., Plainview, on Jan. 17, and another TD Bank at 111 Mineola Ave., Roslyn Heights, on Feb. 17, police said.

In the TD Bank robberies there were no signs of a gun, police said.

No injuries were reported in any of the three robberies, police said.
