Is more snow on the way for Long Island?

More snow might be on the way for Long Island, just as we dig out from the storm that shrouded the region last week.

A National Weather Service advisory calls for a 40 percent chance of rain Sunday and just a slight chance of snow Sunday night and Monday night. But on Tuesday night, both Nassau and Suffolk have a 40 percent chance of snow. On Wednesday, that falls to 30 percent for Nassau, but rises to 50 percent for Suffolk.

But Matt Scalora, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton, suggested weary Long Islanders should take such predictions with a grain of snow-melting salt.

"There's potential for a storm in the middle of next week," he said. "It's too early to tell."

Most of Long Island got 8 to 14 inches of snow during last week's storm, according to National Weather Service estimates released Saturday. Woodmere saw 15 inches, the most in either county. In Nassau, Floral Park, Jericho and Valley Stream all exceeded 14 inches. In Suffolk, Lindenhurst and Smithtown both got more than 11 inches.

Some parts of Long Island were spared heavy falls: Riverhead and Southampton each stayed below 6 inches of snow.

About 21 inches of snow fell in Central Park. And parts of upstate got as much as 32 inches.

If more snow does come this week, two area children said they wouldn't mind. Saturday, Jessica O'Keefe, 8, and her brother Brian, 7, headed to Bethpage State Park with their father for some sledding.

Apparently, they're not tired of staying home or playing outside.

"Both of us missed out on our spelling tests," Jessica said.
