Nassau police have charged a Mineola man with burglary after a woman found him in the basement of her home Tuesday evening.
Police said Wednesday Jose Almendares, 35, was discovered in the basement of a Ninth Avenue home after a 64-year-old woman heard noises and went to check it out about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday. After seeing him, the woman fled her Mineola home and called police.
Police said a Third Precinct officer, along with a sergeant, responded to the home and found Almendares hiding on the stairs leading from the basement to the main floor of the house. Police said Almendares refused to comply with orders from the officers, and a brief struggled ensued. One of the officers suffered a fracture to his hand, police said.
Almendares is charged with first-degree burglary, second-degree assault and resisting arrest, police said. He was arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Hempstead. Court records show Almendares is being held with bail set at $25,000 bond or $12,500 cash.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Friday.
