Lawrence man arrested on drug, gun charges
A Lawrence man arrested after Nassau County police said officers found drugs and a handgun in his car was ordered held on bond Sunday.
Police said Kyheim Lameek Bethea, 32, was driving a 1998 Nissan east on Mott Avenue Saturday shortly after 3 p.m., but was not wearing a seat belt. At his arraignment Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead, Bethea was ordered held on $125,000 cash bail or $250,000 bond, according to court records.
He is due back in court on Wednesday.
After police pulled Bethea over, officers reported smelling marijuana in the car and found two large bags full of what they believed to be marijuana under a jacket on the rear seat.
Police said they also found a loaded .40-caliber Ruger handgun in a knapsack in the trunk of the car.
Bethea was arrested and charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, fourth-degree criminal possession of marijuana and operating a vehicle without wearing a seat belt.
