Officers responding to 911 calls of shots fired Monday night in Roosevelt arrested an armed 27-year-old Hempstead man after a foot pursuit, Nassau County police said.

When arrested, Dontay Williamson, of 50 Laurel Ave., was carrying a loaded .22-caliber Jennings LR handgun that had been reported stolen, police said. Williamson was charged with second-degree and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, as well as fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

He was arraigned Tuesday in First District Court in Hempstead. Details were not immediately available Wednesday.

Police said they received several 911 calls at 11:42 p.m. on the Fourth of July reporting shots fired on Bainbridge Street in Roosevelt. Callers identified a man wearing a blue checkered shirt as the shooter, saying he was waving a gun in the air.

On arrival, officers said they saw Williamson, who they said matched the description given, and as they approached him, they said he pulled a handgun from his rear pants pocket, then fled on foot on Frederick Avenue. Police said Williamson was caught after a short pursuit. It was not clear if Williamson dropped the gun before he ran away or if he had it when it was recovered.
