Man convicted of his ex's rape, frame-up
A man who concocted an elaborate plot to frame his ex-girlfriend in Nassau and the city in order to undermine her rape charge against him in Queens was convicted Wednesday of the rape and frame-up.
As a result of Jerry Ramrattan's plot -- in which he planted phony evidence, recruited fake witnesses and convinced authorities in both counties that his accuser, Seemona Sumasar, was masquerading as a cop while robbing people -- Sumasar spent more than a half year in 2010 in the Nassau County jail.
Yesterday afternoon, a Queens jury convicted Ramrattan, 39, of Far Rockaway, of charges including the 2009 rape, perjury and conspiracy.
Newsday does not typically identify victims of sexual assault unless they identify themselves, as Sumasar has.
While she was jailed on $1 million bond, an attorney for Sumasar insisted that casino surveillance photos showed Sumasar in the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut at the time of the alleged robberies. But Nassau prosecutors insisted the pictures weren't conclusive enough. She was also charged in Queens. Only when an informant came forward did the ruse begin to unravel.
Both cases against her have been dismissed.
During Sumasar's time in jail, she was separated from her 12-year-old daughter, her business shut down and her home went into foreclosure.
Now it's Ramrattan who is locked up, and he faces more than 25 years in prison at a January sentencing.
