A 20-year-old college student from Manhasset died when he lost control of a skateboard he was riding and was struck by a truck in Manhattan, New York City police said Wednesday night.

Kyle Larson, a student at New York University, was riding the skateboard south on Union Square West about 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, police said.

Larson was near 37 Union Square West, police said, when he lost control, fell, and was hit by a 2004 Mitsubishi box truck that was also traveling south.

Larson was taken to Beth Israel Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, the NYPD said.

Reached at her Manhasset home Wednesday night, Larson's mother, Nancy, said the family was grieving and had no comment.

"The New York University community was saddened to learn of the death of Kyle Larson, an undergraduate student at the College of Arts and Science. We extend our condolences to his family," the university said in a statement.

The 35-year-old operator of the delivery truck remained at the scene, police said, and no criminality was suspected.

The investigation is continuing, police said, and the NYPD wants to locate for questioning a bicyclist who was riding nearby at the time.
