Manhasset school district
VOTING

THE BUDGET
The district proposes a $90,389,627 budget for 2015-16, a 2.79 percent increase from the current $87,933,150. The local tax levy would rise 2.52 percent, from $80,839,019 to $82,872,705.
This increase is equal to the state's tax-cap limit of 2.52 percent, so a simple majority vote will be required to approve the budget. School taxes on the average single-family home would increase 2.36 percent, from $11,939 to $12,221.
The proposed budget includes a 1 percent contractual salary increase and a 1.76 percent step increase, which includes a delayed amount from the 2014-15 school year. Also included is funding for a step delay within the 2015-16 school year.
The district, continuing to restore and rebuild after cuts made in the 2013-14 budget, proposes to add the full-time equivalent of 13.7 teachers, including the equivalent of 1.2 elementary math specialists, as well as mandated elementary and secondary ESL teachers; add new high school course offerings, including Mandarin Chinese 1, multivariable calculus, advanced creative writing and AP computer science; and increase sections of courses, including architectural drawing, introduction to business, introduction to psychology and AP environmental science.
The district also proposes offering middle school level intramural athletics. That and restoring financial support to the Manhasset Coalition Against Substance Abuse and the Parent Child Home Program, a parental modeling and school readiness program for children from low-income families.
Increased state aid is helping the district stay within the cap, while adding teachers, new courses and sections, said Rosemary Johnson, deputy superintendent for business and finance. That's as enrollment has increased 7.5 percent since 2009-2010, she said.
