Nassau County programs to honor Martin Luther King

Nassau County plans to host a weekend of programs to mark the birthday and life of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., the leader of the American civil rights movement who was assassinated on April 4, 1968.

"Dr. King's message is one of equality, justice, peace and community ... [and] this holiday commemorates his values and ideals for a better America," Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano said.

"His fight to ensure that all Americans share the same freedom is one we all share responsibility in achieving."

On Jan. 17, the African American Museum of Nassau County will present a theatrical presentation entitled "The Trilogy of Truth II, Women of Courage" -- performed by the Shades of Truth Theater Company. The production provides insight into the lives of Harriet Tubman, Ida B. Wells and Barbara Jordan. The 8 p.m. show at 110 N. Franklin St., Hempstead, asks for a donation of $5. There is also a Theatrical VIP Reception, 6:45-7:45 p.m. A $30 donation is required, which includes admission to the play.

An Ecumenical Interfaith Service is Jan. 18 at 7 p.m., at New Covenant Church, 757 Bellmore Ave., East Meadow. There will be a Freewill Offering. More information is available at 516-572-2244.

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 28th annual Scholarship Awards Luncheon is Jan. 19 at 11:30 a.m. at the Marriott Hotel in Uniondale. Mangano will be honorary chairman.

Proceeds from all the events benefit the MLK Committee Scholarship Fund that assists local high school seniors seeking higher education.
