More charges for suspect in rape, home invasion

More charges have been filed against the Hempstead man accused of going on a crime spree around the time of superstorm Sandy.

Artie Jackson, 46, already was charged with rape, assault, robbery, burglary and attempted murder in connection with two home invasions this month in Garden City during a storm-related outage.

Jackson now faces additional felony charges of burglary, robbery and criminal possession of a weapon in connection to a third break-in at a home in Hempstead on Nov. 7. As in the previous two cases, which took place on Nov. 8 and Nov. 11, the victims were home and their cars taken.

According to court documents, on Nov. 7, Jackson entered the Hempstead home through an unlocked rear door at about 6:15 p.m., tied up his victims with neck ties and shoelaces, and covered their heads with pillow cases while holding them at gunpoint.

Jackson spent about 45 minutes in the home "placing assorted electronics, jewelry" and money into duffel bags, according to the documents. At one point, according to the documents, Jackson "became angry, stating, 'You guys think I'm kidding' and fired one bullet from his gun to the ceiling."

In that home invasion, he tied up four people and brought them upstairs before taking off in one of their vehicles, documents charge.

Two additional attempted murder charges have been added in connection with the Nov. 8 and Nov. 11 break-ins.

In the most recent one, Jackson is accused of assaulting an East Garden City woman in her home and choking her with a plastic handcuff device.

Police have said Jackson might be linked to a dozen more burglaries.

Jackson is due back in Nassau First District Court Thursday.
