The state has reopened most shellfish harvesting areas in Suffolk and Nassau that have been closed because of runoff from heavy rain during the past weekend storm.

But state environmental officials said some bays and harbors in both counties still remain off limits, pending additional water quality tests. Storm water washes pollutants into bays and harbors that can make shellfish hazardous for human consumption.

Normally certified shellfish areas in the following locations were reopened on Thursday and Friday:

Town of Oyster Bay (North Shore): Oyster Bay Harbor and Cold Spring Harbor.

Town of Huntington: Cold Spring Harbor, Lloyd Harbor, Centerport Harbor, Duck Island Harbor, Northport Bay and the southern portion of Huntington Bay.

Towns of Smithtown and Brookhaven: Stony Brook Harbor and its tributaries.

Town of Riverhead: Flanders Bay and its tributaries.

Town of Southampton: Sag Harbor and outer Sag Harbor, all certified areas along the town's North Shore between Red Cedar Point and the North Haven peninsula, as well as Mecox Bay, Quantuck Bay, Quantuck Canal and Shinnecock Bay and their tributaries.

Town of Southold: All shellfish lands within the creeks, harbors and bays within the Town of Southold, including Fishers Island; and a portion of Cutchogue Harbor and a portion of Southold Bay.

Town of Shelter Island: All shellfish lands within the town, including Coecles Harbor, Manantic Creek, West Neck Bay, West Neck Creek and West Neck Harbor.

Town of East Hampton: Sag Harbor, outer Sag Harbor and Northwest Harbor, Three Mile Harbor, Hog Creek, Acabonac Harbor, Napeague Harbor and Montauk Harbor.

The following areas are still closed but may be opened in the next few days:

Town of Hempstead: All shellfish lands

Town of Oyster Bay: South Oyster Bay
