Police identified the officer as Frank Milano, 36, of Elmont.

The crash occurred at 12:01 a.m. on the westbound Southern State just east of Exit 19, Peninsula Boulevard. Police said the car, a Toyota Camry, veered off the parkway and into a wooded area, striking trees and sustaining severe damage. The officer was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the road was closed until 2:50 a.m. Tuesday for the accident investigation.
