Police identify inmate who died in Nassau jail custody
Police on Friday released the identity of the Nassau County jail inmate they have said died last month after attempting suicide.
The homicide investigation into the death of Steven Hamm, 57, of Far Rockaway, is ongoing as authorities await toxicology results and other findings from the medical examiner’s office – which is standard procedure, a Nassau police spokeswoman said on Friday.
Hamm died at 2:55 a.m. on Sept. 14 at Nassau University Medical Center, three days after attempting suicide at the East Meadow correctional facility, according to authorities.
Sources previously told Newsday that the inmate tried to hang himself.
The state Division of Criminal Justice Services will do a separate probe of the jail custody death, as in all cases involving inmate fatalities.
Records show Hamm was in jail after a Sept. 4 arrest for allegedly stealing from an Elmont home improvement store.
