A Seaford man speeding on a North Bellmore road struck another vehicle Friday evening, putting in motion a set of chain-reaction crashes that left him dead and killed a pedestrian.

Stephen A. Rossman, 20, was behind the wheel of a 2014 Nissan Rogue traveling west “at a high rate of speed” on Jerusalem Avenue near George Road at 9:25 p.m. when his vehicle hit the back of a 2007 Nissan Altima, driven by a 26-year-old-woman, causing it to strike a 45-year-old female pedestrian, Nassau County police said in a news release Saturday.

The Altima continued to spin out of control and then hit a 2013 Subaru, operated by a 54-year-old man, that was traveling east on Jerusalem Avenue, police said. Rossman’s Rogue continued west and hit a roll-off trash bin, forcing it into the street where the trash bin slammed into a 2005 Nissan that was traveling west, driven by a 27-year-old woman, police said.

Rossman’s Rogue only came to a halt when it hit a 2006 Ford box truck parked on the road, police said.

Rossman was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The identity of the pedestrian, described by police only as a woman from Wantagh who was crossing north on Jerusalem Avenue, is being withheld until her family is notified. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A photo of the scene shows mangled car wreckage and debris strewed along the roadway and sidewalk.

The driver of the Altima suffered nonlife-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment, police said. The motorists in the Subaru and second Nissan refused medical attention at the scene and were able to remove their vehicles from the location, police said.
