Officials: Man struck by LIRR train was apparent suicide
A Syosset man was struck and killed by a Long Island Rail Road train at the Hicksville station late Saturday morning in what authorities said was an apparent suicide.
Victor Casagrande, 36, was struck at about 11:30 a.m. by a westbound train that had left Ronkonkoma at 10:42 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene, railroad spokesman Salvatore Arena said.
A police investigation into the death temporarily halted service on parts of the Port Jefferson/Huntington Branch for about two hours, and there were residual delays into the afternoon. Service on the Ronkonkoma Branch also was delayed for a time.
Buses ran between Hicksville and Huntington during that time, according to the LIRR's website.
Three trains between Huntington and Penn Station were canceled, according to the website. Service on the Ronkonkoma Branch also was delayed for a time.
As of 3 p.m., Arena said all trains were running on schedule.
