A fatal accident on the Meadowbrook State Parkway has closed down the southbound lanes near Uniondale, authorities said early Monday.

State Police confirmed the fatality but said details would not be available for several hours.

Nassau police said they received a report of the accident sometime after midnight around the Hempstead Turnpike exit or M5, that the road was closed southbound and there was a heavy police presence at the accident scene with ambulances being sent as well.

The accident has resulted in the closure of the Meadowbrook southbound between Hempstead Turnpike -- or Route 24, at Exit M5 in Uniondale -- and the Southern State Parkway, at Exit M6 in North Merrick.

There was one severely damaged car in the woods off the parkway at the scene next to what appeared to be a downed tree. The car's airbags appear to have been deployed. There were multiple police and fire vehicles as well as ambulances there.
