Pedestrian, 71, seriously hurt after hit by motorcycle on Hempstead Turnpike, police say
A 71-year-old woman was seriously injured when she was struck by a motorcycle Wednesday morning while crossing Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont, police said.
Nassau County police did not release the identity of the victim, who was transported to a local hospital with a serious leg injury. The motorcyclist, identified only as a 57-year-old man, also was hospitalized with non-life-threatening internal injuries.
The woman was crossing north to south near Meachem Avenue at 5:04 a.m. when police said she was struck by the westbound Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
The crash closed a section of westbound Hempstead Turnpike for about five hours.
The motorcycle was impounded for a safety check, but police said there is no apparent criminality. The investigation is continuing.
