One driver died and another was unhurt when their vehicles collided on the Southern State Parkway in North Massapequa during Wednesday's morning rush hour, police said.

The westbound lanes at Exit 31 near the Bethpage State Parkway were closed after the collision, which was reported at about 9:27 a.m., a State Police statement said. A State Police spokesman said they had since reopened Wednesday afternoon. One of the vehicles caught fire, according to the state transportation department website.

As of early Wednesday evening, further details were not available, according to the spokesman, Trooper Dan Ahlgrim.

Wednesday's crash on the Southern State, long one of Nassau County's deadliest parkways, happened less than a month after a wrong-way crash Sept. 23 on the parkway at Exit 29 killed four and injured two people.
