A state trooper’s cruiser burst into flames Wednesday night in Garden City while he was outside the vehicle checking a traffic accident, state police said.

An apparent mechanical problem caused the fire, officials said.

The front half of the cruiser was heavily damaged, with windows broken, the front bumper ripped out and the engine blackened.

Police said the vehicle was parked on the Meadowbrook State Parkway by the Merchants Concourse exit when the fire started in the engine just before 6 p.m.

No one was injured, police said.
