Sunrise Highway crash leaves 1 dead, officials say
Nassau County police said they were investigating whether a medical emergency could have contributed to a crash Monday that left a 56-year-old Sound Beach man dead in Freeport.
Donald Curatolo was killed when the van he was driving collided with a box truck on Sunrise Highway and Helen Avenue at about 5:30 a.m.
Curatolo was pronounced dead at scene and a 28-year-old male passenger in the 2007 Ford E150 he was driving was transported to a hospital for treatment, police said in a news release Monday night.
The 25-year-old driver of the box truck was not hurt, police said.
Police said the crash occurred when Curatolo’s westbound van struck the 2017 Chevrolet box truck that was in a westbound left turn lane to enter Home Depot.
Police said they were looking into whether an unspecified medical emergency may have been a factor in the crash and added that there was no indication of criminality.
A photograph from the scene showed a commercial van that had crashed into a tree, with heavy damage to the driver’s side.
The crash led police to close off a stretch of Sunrise Highway for about four hours, including during Monday’s morning rush.
A message left at a number for the company listed on the side of the van was not returned Monday.
