A tanker-truck fire Saturday morning prompted the evacuation of homes and closed parts of four roads in the South Shore hamlet of Hewlett. Nassau County police said the fire began in the truck's engine about 7:50 a.m. in the area of Peninsula Boulevard and Mill Road. The driver was not reported to be injured. A tanker-truck fire Saturday morning prompted the evacuation of homes and closed parts of four roads in the South Shore hamlet of Hewlett.

The truck was located in the area of Peninsula Boulevard and Mill Road before 7:50 a.m. when the fire began in the engine, Nassau County police said.

The fire was contained to the truck's cab. The driver was not reported to be injured. The truck was carrying an unknown fuel.

Parts of Peninsula Boulevard, Mill Road, Steven Drive and Dubois Avenue that were closed Saturday morning had reopened about 8:50 a.m.

Residents of nearby homes were evacuated for about an hour.
