Swimming has been suspended at West Beach at Heckscher State Park in East Islip because of unacceptable water quality, the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation said Thursday.
Closing Field 6 at West Beach is precautionary, to assure the health and safety of swimmers, the state agency said, and based on recent samples.
Additional testing results will be reviewed to determine when swimming will again be permitted, the agency said in a news release.

Also, as a precautionary measure, 10 Nassau County beaches were closed to swimmers Thursday, the county's health department said.
Health officials, citing recent heavy rains, said stormwater runoff can sweep bacteria and pathogens into local streams and bays, causing bacterial levels to spike.
The beaches, all on the North Shore, closed to swimming include: Centre Island Sound, Creek Club, Lattingtown Beach, Laurel Hollow Beach, Piping Rock Beach Club, Pryibil Beach, Ransom Beach, Theodore Roosevelt Beach, Soundside Beach and Stehli Beach.
Also, Biltmore Beach Club in Massapequa remains closed because of elevated levels of bacteria, the department said in a release.
