Woman killed by LIRR train in Syosset

A woman was killed late Wednesday after she was struck by a Long Island Rail Road train at the Robbins Lane crossing in Syosset, officials said.

Salvatore Arena, Long Island Rail Road spokesman, said the LIRR received a report around 4:30 p.m. that a westbound Huntington-Port Jefferson branch non-passenger train had struck a trespasser. He said the gates were down at the time of the crash.

"The MTA police responded to the scene," he said. "This person was killed at the scene."

No information on the woman's age, name or where she was from was immediately available, said Arena, who added that "As a result of the incident, we had to shut down power along one of two tracks through that area."

Between 4:45 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. trains were operating on one instead of two tracks and were running at reduced speed due because of the accident, he said, adding, "We had to start selectively canceling trains and combining them with other trains."

At 9:20 p.m., the Port Jefferson line was listed on the LIRR as being in "good service" with no delays indicated.
