No bathing advised at 18 Nassau and 58 Suffolk beaches due to high bacteria levels after heavy rainfall

Health officials have issued an advisory against bathing at 76 Long Island beaches on Saturday as a precaution due to heavy rainfall.

Health authorities say 18 beaches in Nassau and 58 in Suffolk are affected by the advisory because of the possibility of bacteria levels exceeding New York state standards. Suffolk officials also have closed four other beaches in the county due to high bacteria levels.

Beaches named in the advisory are routinely impacted by stormwater runoff caused by heavy rainfall, which can raise bacteria levels. Health officials recommend that bathing and other water contact be suspended in affected areas until the waters have been flushed by two successive tidal cycles, at least a 24-hour period, after the rain has ended.

The advisory will be lifted at 9 a.m. Sunday in Nassau and at noon in Suffolk, unless additional rainfall or water samples show elevated bacteria levels.
