Gary Melius, a major political fundraiser and owner of Oheka Castle in Huntington, was shot in the head on the grounds of the estate-turned-wedding-venue on Feb. 24, 2014 by a masked gunman, Suffolk police said.

Despite being shot in the head, Melius recovered during the months after the shooting, while the case remained unsolved six months later.

Speaking publicly on March 10, 2014, for the first time after he was shot by a mysterious gunman three weeks earlier outside Oheka Castle in Huntington Station, major political donor and developer Gary Melius said: "I want you to know that I'm healing, getting better, and I'm looking forward to just starting over again."
