Despite being under federal indictment, Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano and his wife, Linda, are not avoiding the public spotlight.

Mangano was the face of Nassau on television news during Tuesday’s storm. He just announced his plan to give the 2017 State of the County address at the newly renovated Nassau Coliseum on April 3.

And then there is this:

“Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano presents Just Desserts,” described as a Mother’s Day celebration honoring women of distinction at the Cradle of Aviation Museum. The $20-a-ticket event on May 18 will feature “signature Desserts by Top Bakers!” and is “co-hosted by Linda Mangano,” the county announcement says.

Mangano and his wife were arrested and charged with corruption by federal authorities in October. Mangano is accused of taking bribes and kickbacks from indicted restaurateur Harendra Singh. Linda Mangano is charged with obstruction and making false statements in relation to $450,000 she received from an alleged “no-show” job from Singh. Prosecutors said one of Linda Mangano’s jobs was to serve as a “food taster.”

Both Manganos have pleaded not guilty and have suggested to supporters that the charges ultimately will be dismissed. A trial is scheduled for January.

Mangano’s term ends Dec. 31 and he has not said whether he will run for re-election. The Nassau Republican party has yet to designate an alternate candidate.

A dumpster-diving whistleblower shed light on alleged corruption in the town of Oyster Bay. After two years reporting on the story, federal investigators have brought charges against Nassau's top politician and his wife, and a town's supervisor, in a case that began with a local restaurateur.  Credit: Newsday / Staff
