BACKGROUND

  • Sapraicone, 68, of North Hills, is running on the Republican and Conservative party lines in the general election.
  • He began his career as an NYPD transit police officer in 1980, becoming a detective before retiring in 2000. He attended John Jay College of Criminal Justice but did not earn a degree.
  • Sapraicone founded Squad Security, a private security firm, which he sold this year.
NewsdayTV’s Joye Brown talks one-on-one with GOP candidate Michael Sapraicone, who’s running against Democratic incumbent Kirsten Gillibrand, at NewsdayTV studios.

ISSUES

  • Sapraicone said that if elected he would lead a fight to require state politicians to repeal the cashless bail law and seek to pass legislation in Congress to prevent local governments from defunding police departments and compel New York City to reverse a $1 billion funding cut to the NYPD.
  • Sapraicone is promising to require the federal government to secure the border and stop the flow of fentanyl into the United States.
  • He also said he would seek to restore the state and local tax (SALT) deduction now capped at $10,000 and work to boost federal funds for local school districts.
