[UPDATE: Newsday's Thomas Brune confirmed through census-based data provided in the judge's proposal that, yes, King's home lands in the 2nd Congressional District.]

Perhaps underscoring the unlikely prospect that a federal magistrate’s proposed congressional maps for New York become law, Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) sounded a bit blasé about where the lines were drawn.

It appears that Seaford is one of the westernmost communities in what U.S. Magistrate Roanne Mann calls the 2nd Congressional District. But it’s right up against the eastern boundary of the 4th Congressional District, home of Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-Mineola).

“I’ll either run in the 2nd District or the 4th District,” King said of the two South Shore-based districts. “I’m not even sure which district my house is in. It [the district line] seems to come down through Seaford. But again we haven't gotten any detail on that. . . . Two is the district in which people would expect me to run in.”

A clerk in Mann's office refused to provide any explanation of district boundaries.

Mann is slated to forward her proposal to a three-judge panel next week. But state Senate and Assembly leaders say they expect to reach an agreement on new lines soon and pass them into law – negating the need for the federal court’s action.
